Darren Cann, a 55-year-old official from Norfolk, holds the distinction of being the most experienced match official in Premier League history, having served in the league since 2005. He employs a straightforward method to manage the verbal abuse he occasionally encounters. Last month, Cann surpassed Mike Dean’s record by officiating in 562 top-flight matches. For two decades, he has refereed and served as a linesman before crowds exceeding 50,000, who are frequently animated by rulings made against their respective teams. Cann, who served as an assistant referee in both the Champions League final and the World Cup final in 2010, mentally transports himself to the less prominent Norfolk locations where he commenced his career as a match official. Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Cann stated, “Usually they’re not saying particularly pleasant things. I started refereeing in Norfolk and I remember the very same, so I take things [from that] into every Premier League game now.” He elaborated on his method, saying, “I pretend I’m at Eaton Park or Sloughbottom or somewhere around Norfolk where it’s simply 11 against 11 on a green pitch. If you can block out the noise, you can focus and hopefully get decisions correct more often than not.” Cann further commented on the pressures of the role, explaining, “There’s a lot more scrutiny these days and I make mistakes the same as everybody else but you can’t dwell on it. You’ll get the next decision wrong as well if you think too much about it.” He drew an analogy, adding, “It’s a bit like a centre-forward who misses an open goal, if you dwell on it you’ll miss the next chance as well. You can’t change the decision, the most important thing is to get the next one right.” Cann, who previously played for Norwich City and Crystal Palace as a youth team member, has officiated over 1,000 professional matches since starting in 1991. He joined the English Football League list in 2001, subsequently progressing to the Premier League four years later. Presently, he is one of three assistant referees from Norfolk included on the Premier League roster, alongside Lee Betts and Dan Robathan. Cann expresses a desire to assist more aspiring officials in advancing through the county’s development system. Cann further remarked, “There are only 30 Premier League assistant referees in the country and we have three of them in Norfolk but it would be great to have others coming into the Premier League in future.” He also endorsed local initiatives, stating, “Norfolk FA run regular referee courses and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s interested.” Reflecting on his career, he concluded, “I still love doing it and I’m lucky to have the best seat in the house but, when time allows and I do finally hang up the flag, it’d be great to give something back to local referees.” Post navigation London City Lionesses Advance in Women’s FA Cup with 4-0 Victory Over Gwalia Postecoglou Prioritizes Entertainment in Football
