Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott stated that Anfield is “not the place you want to play when you are low on confidence,” as his previous club prepares to compete against Premier League leaders Liverpool this Sunday. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Planet Premier League podcast, Lescott addressed the team’s current confidence levels, remarking: “I think it might be their biggest problem because I don’t think any of them have been through it.” He elaborated that regardless of any similar experiences at prior clubs, the team has not encountered such a situation at their current elite standing, where they are recognized as the top team. Lescott suggested that experiencing a dip in confidence while at the pinnacle of their sport could potentially have a more significant negative impact on their performance. He described the effects of low confidence, noting: “Your confidence is low, you don’t feel as quick, you don’t feel as strong, you’re not showing as much as you want to show. All of a sudden, you are thinking: ‘Am I going to control this?'” Reiterating his point, Lescott emphasized that “If you’re low on confidence, Anfield is not the place you want to play at. Even when you are high on confidence, one missed control [of the ball] or one bad pass can derail you.” He concluded by asserting that facing Anfield under their current circumstances is likely the most formidable challenge the team will ever encounter.
