Accommodation has been secured for all individuals who were evacuated from their street following an explosion that resulted in two fatalities. Archie York, aged seven, and Jason Laws, 35, lost their lives in the blast that occurred in Violet Close, Benwell, Newcastle, on 16 October. Newcastle City Council reported that a total of 140 people have either gone back to their original homes, relocated to new council properties, or are residing in temporary accommodation while necessary repairs are conducted. Three individuals were apprehended and subsequently released on bail in connection with the ongoing Northumbria Police investigation. The explosion tore through the central section of the terraced apartment block during the early morning hours. The Labour-led council announced that demolition work has commenced on the properties destroyed by the blast, following the site’s transfer from police custody to the local authority. Residents of adjacent properties will be unable to return home until this work is finished, which is anticipated to be in early 2025. Paula Maines, the council’s housing lead, stated: “This has been an incredibly difficult period for a huge number of people, not least those who are grieving the loss of loved ones, with all residents suffering severe disruption to their lives.I must give huge credit to residents for the way they have conducted themselves with such integrity during an experience nobody could have been prepared for.” The council indicated that it was unable to carry out surveys to determine the full extent of damage to the properties while crime scene investigators and other regulatory bodies remained on site. Maines further commented: “There’s still some way to go and of course the impact of what took place here can never be forgotten, but we look forward to helping residents return to some sense of normality and independence in their lives as quickly and safely as possible.” The three men arrested, two in their 30s and one in his 50s, were detained on suspicion of two counts of manslaughter and the production of a Class B drug, specifically cannabis. They have since been granted police bail as inquiries proceed. For updates, follow BBC Newcastle on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. Story ideas can be sent to northeastandcumbria@bbc.co.uk.
