Law enforcement authorities are investigating the defacement of a young mother’s memorial stone. The deceased, Claire Wealleans, a resident of Ashington, Northumberland, passed away in 2022 at 43 years old due to a rare cancer. According to her sister, Jade Armstrong, the damage to Ms. Wealleans’s gravestone at St John’s Church in the town evoked the sensation of “losing Claire all over again.” Northumbria Police Inspector Wayne Daniels characterized the incident as “despicable” and affirmed the force’s commitment to employing all available resources to “bring those responsible for such a sickening crime” to justice. Ms. Armstrong indicated that the gravestone appeared to have been broken with a sledgehammer, suggesting a targeted act. Police confirmed that the act of vandalism took place between August 15 and September 5. Ms. Armstrong noted that her sister’s death occurred slightly over two years prior. She also mentioned that the family had withheld information about the vandalism from her sister’s two children, aged 5 and 17. She stated, “It’s hard enough for us to try and wrap our heads around it.” Ms. Armstrong reported that the family is awaiting the creation of a replacement gravestone, a process that is proceeding slower than anticipated. “We hope to have one up by Christmas,” she commented. She expressed the family’s profound confusion regarding the motive behind the incident. “We don’t know if it’s going to happen again,” she added, describing the situation as “kind of like walking on eggshells.” Northumbria Police urged individuals with relevant information to contact the department.
