An additional traffic camera, designed to identify drivers disregarding prohibited turns at a bustling town centre intersection, has commenced operation. This enforcement device is located on Horseshoe Street in Northampton, a site where a pre-existing camera monitors vehicles making left turns from Marefair. Starting Monday, the newly activated equipment will specifically target vehicles executing left turns from Horseshoe Street onto Marefair, as well as right turns into Gold Street. Phil Larratt, the West Northamptonshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, stated, “We hope that they will act as a deterrent to those that continually ignore the rules.” He further expressed his hope that “residents will be supportive of our efforts to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers and reduce the risk of accidents.” This latest camera installation comes after a comparable device was introduced at the identical junction during the previous month. A six-month grace period will be implemented for the new devices, during which a warning notice will be issued for initial offences committed by any vehicle. The council indicated that starting in June, any infraction would result in a penalty charge notice (PCN) of £70, which would be lowered to £35 if settled within 21 days. Furthermore, a separate camera located at the upper section of Gold Street, specifically between College Street and Bridge Street, is scheduled to become operational on 13 January. This particular device will not include a six-month warning period. It will enforce current bus lane regulations, mirroring the system in place at The Drapery, leading to an immediate PCN for any offending drivers.
