A theatre is set to undergo a £20 million renovation after councillors approved plans for its transformation. Malvern Theatres, situated in Malvern, will gain a new 240-seat auditorium and an elevator at the Priory Park entrance, in addition to enhancements for stairs and lighting. Planning permission was granted by Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) during a meeting held on Wednesday. Construction is scheduled to commence next summer, and the theatre intends to remain operational throughout the entire construction period. Fred Moroni, the chief executive, indicated that the auditorium plans would facilitate hosting more community theatre and providing additional classes and workshops. The Forum Theatre is also slated for improvements to enhance its accessibility for wheelchair users and individuals with disabilities. The initial phase of the theatre’s redevelopment concluded last year with the opening of the Studio One auditorium. Councillor John Gallagher expressed enthusiasm for the progression of the second stage of these plans, stating: “This will mean further investment in this wonderful facility which will expand access to the arts, improve wellbeing, increase education and employment opportunities, as well as provide a boost to the tourism and economy within the area.” Upon completion, the development will feature flexible workshop areas, a recording studio, and a small amphitheatre designated for free community access. Mr Moroni commented: “We are thrilled that MHDC has chosen to progress this ambitious project. It will transform Malvern Theatres into a nationally significant centre of excellence for the arts.” Updates from BBC Hereford & Worcester are available on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
