The custom-built glass lifts have commenced operation following multiple postponements in the renovation of a Grade II listed tunnel. The renovation project for the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnel, which connects Howdon in North Tyneside with Jarrow in South Tyneside, began more than ten years ago. Although the tunnel itself became accessible again in summer 2019, the implementation of the two inclined lifts faced setbacks due to the Covid pandemic, challenges in sourcing components, and the insolvency of the initial contractor. Operators of the tunnel characterized the process as having been a “long journey”. These lifts, capable of accommodating up to 21 individuals, are scheduled for monitoring throughout their initial weeks of service. Patrons are advised that brief maintenance intervals might be necessary during a “bedding in” period. The tunnel’s management stated that it represented a “complex project” and a “frustrating wait.” They further commented: “We understand that this has been a long journey and we are pleased that the lifts have now opened to the public.” Individuals retain the option to utilize the vertical lifts situated on both the northern and southern entrances of the tunnel; however, the wooden escalators will cease to be regularly operational. Reports from 2020 indicated that the overall cost for the tunnel’s refurbishment had reached £16.9m, significantly exceeding the initial budget of £6.9m. A representative for the North East Combined Authority (NECA) confirmed this week that the comprehensive cost of the undertaking remains undetermined, with finalization anticipated in the forthcoming months. British company Lift Design Limited was engaged three years prior to take over from an Italian engineering firm, whose capacity to conclude the project had been impeded by Covid travel restrictions. Prior delays were attributed to the structure’s listed building designation, the detection of asbestos, and the bankruptcy of the initial contractor, GB Building Solutions.
