A classic car club recently delivered presents to children spending Christmas at a Birmingham hospital. Members of the Coleshill Auto Breakfast Club provided gifts to both children and staff at Heartlands Hospital, ensuring they would have items to open on Christmas Day. On Sunday, a convoy of classic trucks and cars visited the hospital, offering the children an alternative to a traditional Santa Claus appearance. Charlotte Schofield, representing the University Hospitals Birmingham Charity, stated that the gifts “mean everything” to the children and staff members who will be away from home during the Christmas period. The group, which began meeting in a pub car park in Coleshill six years ago, transported the presents, escorted by riders from the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes. Gary Byrne, who assisted in organizing the event, commented: “When we all get up on Christmas morning we tend to forget that there’s kids in hospital but also as well we’ve got to remember the staff that have to work at the hospitals.” He added, “So it’s just a little bit of Christmas cheer and a little bit of us saying thank you.” This marks the third consecutive year the group has visited children at the hospital. Ms Schofield noted that the presents ensure that “no-one missed out” this Christmas. She further explained, “Being in the hospital for anybody is obviously incredibly difficult, but being in hospital as a child over Christmas when you should be at home waiting for Santa to come is obviously not how you want to spend your Christmas.” Ms Schofield concluded by stating, “Every single child that’s in hospital on Christmas Day will get a special present from Santa just to show how strong they’ve been and how proud everyone is of them.”
