A popular event celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ through an array of nativity scenes has made its return to a church. More than 100 crib scenes are currently exhibited for the Crib Festival at St John the Baptist Church in Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire. These hand-crafted figures are fashioned from various materials, including stained glass, wool, and toilet rolls. Reverend Chris Butler remarked: “I think for a lot of people, this is the beginning of their Christmas.” The event originated in 2011, inspired by the church’s previous rector who had observed a similar display elsewhere. It was held annually until the Covid pandemic but has only recently recommenced, following significant demand from local residents. This year, 130 different scenes are on display. Some have been loaned by families who have possessed them for generations, while others were crafted by local children and organizations. Additional scenes have been sent from Rwanda and Alaska, incorporating elements that reflect their cultures. “It’s really nice to know that [people] want to be involved,” Rev Butler stated. She further added, “Their creativity and skill is just mind-blowing.” The Crib Festival will run until 1 December.
