Two young siblings have been recognized with bravery awards for their prompt actions in saving their father’s life after a bonfire became uncontrolled and ignited his clothing. Harry, aged eight, and Grace, aged six, intervened to rescue their father, Sam, on November 9 at their residence located on Watnall Road in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. As flames spread to his attire, Grace instructed him to “stop, drop and roll,” while Harry contacted family and friends to seek assistance. According to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, Sam, 33, followed his daughter’s directions by falling to the ground and rolling, which successfully extinguished the fire and prevented further injuries. Firefighters administered first aid to him before he was transported to King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield for additional medical attention. The fire service stated that Harry and Grace’s “quick and brave actions prevented this accident from being much worse.” Grace had recently acquired the life-saving technique she imparted to her father during a fire safety lesson at school, which was instrumental in preventing him from sustaining more severe harm. Sam commented: “As guilty as I feel for putting them both through such a scary ordeal, I couldn’t be more proud of how sensible they were remembering everything taught to them about fire safety.” He added, “Without their actions I could have suffered a far worse injury.” The children were presented with an act of bravery certificate during a safety assembly held at their school, Hucknall Flying High Academy, on Monday. Assistant chief fire officer Damien West remarked: “We are extremely proud of both Harry and Grace.” He continued, “They made a truly scary situation better by staying calm and knowing exactly what to do, which is why it was so important for us as a service to recognise them for their bravery.” West concluded, “This incident is a powerful reminder of how vital fire education is.”
