Clare forward Shane O’Donnell has characterized Tony Kelly’s remarkable goal in the All-Ireland hurling final against Cork as “incredible.” Kelly, the Banner captain, navigated through the Cork defence, culminating in a superb finish that gave his team the lead. This goal contributed to Clare’s one-point triumph against the Rebels, secured after extra-time in a captivating Croke Park final held in July. O’Donnell conveyed his sentiments on The GAA Social podcast, stating: “It was incredible – yeah, stuff that only Tony can do.” He further elaborated on the play: “I was standing beside him and had a man on me. I honestly couldn’t see anyone around him to pass to. There was no option – I was like ‘he’s going to have to do something here, don’t know what it is but he’s going to have to’ and he did.” O’Donnell added that this was not an isolated incident: “That’s not the first time I’ve been in that situation being like ‘I don’t know what he’s going to do here but he’s going to have to pull something out’ and he does.” In addition to his goal against Cork, Kelly scored four points, earning him the man-of-the-match accolade. O’Donnell also delivered a strong performance in the final and is among the nominees for the Hurling Player of the Year award, though he humorously suggested that Kelly surpasses him in skill. O’Donnell shared his perspective on his own standing and Kelly’s exceptional talent: “People say your the best player in the country but I don’t feel I’m the best player in Clare. Tony could walk in this room in the next 20 minutes and I could say I’m not the best player in the room.” He further emphasized Kelly’s distinct abilities: “You look back at almost every score he scored against Cork. I don’t think I could pick another player that could have got them. “There was some element in each of those scores that required his unique skills to actually execute them.”
