West Ham United announced that their striker, Michail Antonio, who is also Jamaica’s record goalscorer in the Premier League, underwent surgery for a lower limb fracture sustained in a car crash on Saturday. The club’s statement indicated he would be “monitored in hospital over the coming days” and conveyed a “heartfelt thank you” to the emergency services and first responders who provided assistance. The 34-year-old Jamaica international required extrication from his vehicle after the incident in Epping and was subsequently transported to a central London hospital. On Saturday evening, West Ham confirmed his condition was stable and that he was “conscious and communicating.” Antonio holds the distinction of being the club’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, having netted 68 goals across 268 league appearances. The West Ham statement further conveyed: “Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news.” It concluded by stating, “The club will provide further updates when appropriate.” The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reported its attendance at the accident scene on Saturday, following calls received at 13:02 GMT, and confirmed the release of a man trapped in his vehicle by 13:45. The full extent of Antonio’s injuries remained undisclosed at that point. Subsequently, Essex Police announced that officers were investigating a serious collision involving a Ferrari and appealed for witnesses, along with individuals possessing dashcam footage of the event, to come forward. A wave of support messages for Antonio has been received, with the Premier League and prominent clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City all responding to a statement from the Hammers on X. His former clubs, Southampton, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, and Colchester, also conveyed wishes for a swift recovery via social media, as did BBC presenter Gary Lineker during Saturday’s broadcast of Match of the Day. Jamaica manager Steve McClaren also issued a message representing Antonio’s international team-mates, stating: “On behalf of the entire group of players, support staff and technical staff, I would like to wish Michail a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this time.” This season, Antonio has participated in all 14 of West Ham’s Premier League fixtures, registering his sole goal in their 4-1 victory against Ipswich on 5 October. The duration of his recovery remains uncertain as the Hammers get ready to host Wolves on Monday (20:00 GMT).
