Firefighters were subjected to attacks, with fireworks thrown at them, during a period characterized as Bonfire Night-related “criminality”. The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that its crews responded to 287 call-outs between November 1 and 5, and more incidents are anticipated during firework celebrations this weekend. West Yorkshire Police stated that six attacks on emergency services personnel were reported, resulting in 10 arrests. Andy Rose, the fire service’s district commander, urged the public to “respect the job we do – we’re here to keep people safe”. He further stated, “Over the last seven days, we’ve had reports of attacks on six firefighters, which is obviously a concern,” adding, “It’s unacceptable and something we strongly condemn.” West Yorkshire Police confirmed that 10 arrests had been made this week in connection with anti-social behaviour, and investigations remained “ongoing”. Assistant Ch Con Sarah Baker commented: “Unfortunately, there are a minority of people who use Bonfire Night and the surrounding days as a backdrop for anti-social behaviour and criminality.” She continued, “We have attended a number of incidents over this period in which fireworks have been directed at people, vehicles and property. Baker added, “Sadly, there have also again been incidences of emergency service personnel and vehicles being targeted with fireworks and other objects.” She emphasized, “These attacks are completely unacceptable.” Baker concluded, “We will be following up on all available lines of inquiry to ensure robust action is taken against those responsible.” Mr Rose noted that while the figure of 287 call-outs appeared high, it was “nothing we’re not used to”. The fire service was preparing to respond to various “organised and unorganised” fireworks events throughout the weekend. Ms Baker further stated: “We know there are still a number of events planned into the weekend and would encourage people to continue to follow safety advice to keep themselves and others safe and to report any anti-social or criminal behaviour they may witness.” Highlights from West Yorkshire are available on BBC Sounds, the latest episode of Look North can be caught up with, or stories for potential coverage can be submitted by emailing yorkshirestories@bbc.co.uk.
