Former Liverpool defender Jim Beglin stated that Kostas Tsimikas “still has a lot to do” to permanently secure the left-back position at Liverpool over Andy Robertson. This season has seen considerable discussion regarding Arne Slot’s preferred player for the role, a position Robertson has occupied consistently since the 2017-18 season during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure. Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside, Beglin, a former left-back for Liverpool from 1983 to 1989, remarked: “Tsimikas has done well in the games he’s stood in for Robertson. As to whether we’re going to see a big change in that regard, I’m not so sure.” He added, regarding Robertson: “Robertson has gone hard at it for years under Klopp – he gave Klopp everything. He’s probably been the best left-back Liverpool have ever had.” Beglin further stated about Robertson’s resolve: “Knowing his character, knowing his feistyness, he’s not backing off. He’s going to give everything he’s got to reclaim his place and say: ‘I’m the number one for this position again.'” He concluded by noting: “Tsimikas has gained ground. Tsimikas has done enough this season to threaten him a little bit. But he still has a lot to do to completely offload him.” Further comments from Beglin, covering topics such as Arne Slot, Ibrahima Konate, and Caoimhin Kelleher, are available on BBC Sounds.
