A homeless individual has stated that he owes his life to the assistance provided by a bus station supervisor. Jeff Adams, aged 75, became homeless following a fire at his residence and was observed by Sue Tycer while he was sleeping on the metal seating at Wednesbury bus station. Ms. Tycer subsequently reached out to Sandwell Council, arranged for temporary housing for Mr. Adams, and utilized Facebook to solicit contributions for refurnishing his flat after the fire damage had been rectified. Mr. Adams has since returned to his own residence and expressed profound gratitude for Ms. Tycer’s aid, remarking, “without her help I’d be dead”. Prior to his decision to remain at the station, Mr. Adams had been offered temporary lodging in central Birmingham, but he preferred to stay nearer to his former home. Ms. Tycer, an employee of Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), commented: “It just wasn’t right, a 75-year-old man sleeping on those cold seats, no covers, nothing.” She added, “But he’s a proud man and wanted to stay local.” The fire had left Mr. Adams, a retired metal stamper and lorry driver, with only the attire he was wearing. This situation led Ms. Tycer to request donations from individuals via a community Facebook page. “I was just overwhelmed by the response. He got a bed, he got a fridge, got a settee, he got bedding, clothes, TV, everything for the kitchen, all through the kindness of strangers,” she stated. She further remarked, “The people of Wednesbury just blew me away.” Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, commented that Ms. Tycer’s initiatives and the community’s reaction “reflect the incredible warmth and generosity that define our region”. He also stated: “Her actions remind us of the difference one person can make.” For updates, follow BBC Birmingham on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
