Plymouth Argyle’s head coach, Wayne Rooney, has stated that he and his team are looking into the reasons behind the significant number of injuries affecting the Pilgrims’ squad, as the team has not secured an away victory this season under his leadership. Following Argyle’s 6-1 defeat to Norwich City in the Championship on Tuesday evening, Rooney described his squad as being “down to the bare bones.” The list of injured players expanded to include defender Lewis Gibson, alongside existing absentees Ryan Hardie, Morgan Whittaker, Brendan Galloway, Conor Hazard, Ibrahim Cissoko, and Muhamed Tijani. Top scorer Morgan Whittaker is confirmed to miss Saturday’s away fixture against Bristol City, with Gibson and Hardie’s participation uncertain, and the remaining injured players continuing as long-term absentees. Rooney indicated that he and his coaching staff have reviewed training data from prior seasons in an effort to identify any factors that might require adjustment. “The injury situation is something I’m looking into and why we’re picking up so many,” Rooney stated to BBC Sport. He further elaborated, “It’s not just one or two, it’s injuries to more than half the starting line-up if all fit, so I think that’s where we are.” Rooney also remarked, “We haven’t got the squad and that’s something we need to evolve over the next few years and get the squad right, try to develop it, but that takes time.” Despite the challenges posed by injuries, Rooney asserted that the team’s performance against Norwich was unacceptable. The Pilgrims allowed six goals, and the margin could have been wider given Norwich’s strong attacking display, particularly during the first half. Rooney commented, “The amount of time I speak to players and they come up and believe they should be playing, it’s really important that when players come into the team they take their opportunity.” He added, “I don’t think any of the 11 players who started the last game did themselves any favours with that.” Rooney concluded, “But the reaction now is really important. It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve got an opportunity now on Saturday to try to put that right.” This season, Plymouth Argyle has allowed four or more goals in three separate away matches. Argyle operates with one of the Championship’s most limited budgets and secured their league status on the concluding day of the previous season. The team currently sits two places and two points clear of the relegation zone, with a mere six points separating Luton Town in 16th position from bottom-of-the-table Portsmouth. Rooney further commented, “We need to be realistic in terms of where we’re at.” He continued, “We know what our goal is for the season, we’ve got a plan and where we’re at, at the minute we’re on plan.” “I think we are where we should be, obviously the table doesn’t lie from that point of view,” Rooney stated. He concluded by saying, “But whether you’ve got a small budget or not you have to have that desire, that fight, to not concede goals as easy as we do, and I think that’s a responsibility on myself to make sure I bring that out of the players, and on Tuesday that didn’t happen.” Post navigation Former Hearts Director Joe Savage Regrets Not Signing Nicky Devlin Katie Taylor Secures Undisputed Title Retention Against Amanda Serrano
