While donkeys are a common sight at the seaside in summer, one is scheduled to take on a festive role later this year. “Christmas Live,” a dramatization of the nativity story, will be presented at Valley Gardens in Withernsea. In addition to a donkey, the production will include horses and a genuine infant, provided the baby is content on the night. The Reverend Philip West stated that individuals who attended a similar production he organized in Easington in 2021 informed him it had “brought the Christmas story to life.” The narrative will unfold across multiple locations within the gardens, with the audience invited to follow the action. Mr. West, representing South Holderness Deanery, commented: “It’s not long. People just walk round with us, and they’re fairly close to it, and you really do feel part of it.” Mr. West noted that the previous event was well received, adding that the audience found the live retelling “very powerful.” He confirmed that the part of Jesus would be played by a real baby, “as long as he’s happy” on the night. Mr. West further remarked: “I’m sure he’ll be perfect.” The event has been arranged by Withernsea Churches Together, with volunteers crafting costumes and scenery. The nativity is set to begin at 18:30 GMT and is free to attend. Organizers confirmed its free admission and announced it would feature traditional carol singing and refreshments.
