Helen Davies, a resident of Redruth, has begun walking her three-year-old Norwegian Forest cat, Indie, on a lead. Although Indie is typically an indoor cat, she now explores the woods close to Plymouth. Ms. Davies explained that she believed her cat was experiencing “cabin fever,” which prompted her to introduce a harness. She stated, “She was absolutely fine and took everything in her stride.” The jewellery maker, Ms. Davies, commented, “She doesn’t go out at home because she’s not very streetwise. I think she just likes being out with us.” She added, “She’s taken to the woods like a Norwegian Forest cat.” A spokesperson for the RSPCA emphasized the importance of owners thoroughly assessing if lead walking is suitable for their cat. If deemed appropriate, the introduction should occur in a “gradual and positive manner,” according to the spokesperson. They further advised, “If any signs of distress are seen, such as the cat trying to pull away or get away, then this should be stopped immediately.” Ms. Davies concurred with this advice, stating, “You have to know your cat before lead training them.” She elaborated on her method: “I just put the harness on her at home and started to see how she coped. You’ll know straightaway if your cat will take to the harness.” According to Ms. Davies, Indie has achieved a notable level of local fame. She remarked, “People do stop us and take pictures and ask us if we have a social media account for her as well.” She observed, “Everyone seems really friendly and happy to see a cat out.” Consequently, she established an Instagram account for Indie, enabling followers to track her excursions in the woods and, weather permitting, on the beach.
