A man previously jailed for the killing of a serving policewoman, which happened when a stolen car he was driving crashed into hers, has admitted to being unlawfully at large from prison. During an appearance at Craigavon Crown Court on Wednesday, Shane Frane, aged 37, pleaded guilty to being unlawfully at large on January 17 of this year. This admission followed his violation of the terms of his temporary release from custody. Frane received a sentence of at least six years in 2014, having previously admitted to the manslaughter of Constable Philippa Reynolds in Londonderry during 2013. Following his evasion, Frane was ultimately apprehended by law enforcement in the Republic of Ireland on February 1 and subsequently extradited to Northern Ireland on February 6. On Wednesday in court, prosecutor Joseph Murphy stated that the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) and legal counsel for Frane concurred that a pre-sentence report was unnecessary, given that Frane is currently serving an indeterminate sentence. Judge Patrick McGurgen assented to this and ordered Frane to be returned to custody, with sentencing scheduled for December 11. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
