A historic lido situated in East Sussex has announced its aspiration to resume operations for a Christmas Day swim, following the completion of necessary repair work. Saltdean Lido, located in Brighton, had been closed since November to address an underground leak, an issue that arose merely months after an £11 million renovation of the structure. The owners have indicated that the replacement of pipework has proceeded successfully and that the process of refilling the pool has commenced. They further noted that contractors have been “braving the wind and rain to keep everything on track” at the 1930s-era establishment. With an anticipated opening date of December 20, a spokesperson confirmed, “Everyone’s feeling confident, so the Christmas Day swim is on.” Derek Leaver, who chairs the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, stated that the wiring for the underwater lights was also replaced during this period. Additionally, new pool covers have been received, which are expected to aid in heat retention and reduce heating expenditures at the nation’s sole Grade II* listed coastal lido. Mr. Leaver underscored the importance of continued public visitation to the lido, adding that the recent repair work was something they “could have done without.” He elaborated, “We’re spending money and not earning money,” and encouraged individuals to keep attending breakfast, yoga classes, and various events at the lido to provide support for the not-for-profit organization. Since 2017, the lido has hosted “Dogtember” fundraising events, making the pool accessible to both dogs and their owners.
