The road, which has experienced flood damage on two occasions this year, has been shut once more following the overflow of the adjacent River Great Ouse. Little Paxton Bridge, located in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, underwent repairs and was subsequently reopened in October, after earlier flooding incidents revealed the underlying old cobbles. According to Cambridgeshire County Council, the most recent repair work was more robust and aimed to enhance the structure’s resistance to flooding. Subsequent to Storm Bert, flood advisories persist for regions adjacent to the River Great Ouse in Wyboston, Eaton Socon, Eynesbury, Eaton Ford, and St Neots. Sections of Mill Lane, situated on both sides of the bridge, were underwater, rendering the thoroughfare impassable. The river’s current level is approximately 1.48m (4.9ft), exceeding its typical range of 0.82m to 1.1m. Additionally, the number 66 bus service has been rerouted and is currently unable to serve stops on Mill Lane or Huntingdon Road “until further notice.” In response to increasing water levels, Huntingdonshire District Council had issued a warning to drivers, advising them to relocate their vehicles from the St Neots Riverside car park by 23:00 GMT on Wednesday. During October, engineers had taken out the previous road surface and installed a new one over the existing concrete base, a modification that the county council characterized as “deeper, more substantial.” Follow Cambridgeshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.Copyright 2024 BBC.
