Exeter City winger Demetri Mitchell, who has been absent for nearly a year due to a knee ligament injury, has stated his intention to “make up for lost time” following his goal-scoring return to action. The 27-year-old came on as a substitute to net the Grecians’ decisive late goal in their 3-2 EFL Trophy victory over Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night. This appearance marked his first in 364 days, since the former Manchester United player sustained the knee ligament injury that had sidelined him. Speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Mitchell expressed his delight: “It’s a great night just to be back playing with the lads.” He further added, “There were a lot of new teammates that I’ve not played with. Just to be touching the pitch on a game day is a special moment for me, not just the goal but just to be out there.” Demetri Mitchell’s last match was on 31 October 2023, when he was forced off the field against Middlesbrough in the League Cup. This injury occurred early in Exeter’s EFL Cup fourth-round defeat to Middlesbrough last season. The setback was significant for the winger, who had impressed since his transfer to St James Park from Hibernian in January 2023. Despite his injury, Exeter offered Mitchell a new contract during the summer, and he conveyed his gratitude for the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities once more. “It was a nine to 12 month injury, that’s what they told me when I had the operation,” he elaborated. Mitchell also noted, “I had a few hiccups along the way with my calf, it’s been frustrating for me the supporters asking when I’m going to be back.” He articulated his desire to repay the faith shown by both the fans and the club: “I want to repay them as much as I want to repay the club for showing their faith in me for re-signing me this season. I’ve lost out on a few games at the start of the season, but I’m going to make up for a bit of lost time now.”
