Outside the Welsh Labour conference, hundreds of demonstrators gathered to protest proposed alterations to inheritance tax regulations affecting farms, while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer articulated a defense of his government’s recently introduced Budget policies. According to farming unions, the planned modifications are expected to result in “disastrous” consequences. Speaking at the conference in Llandudno, Conwy, Sir Keir Starmer affirmed his commitment to defending the Budget “all day long,” citing its “tough decisions that were necessary to stabilise our economy.” A number of tractors and agricultural vehicles, totaling in the dozens, were positioned on the promenade adjacent to Venue Cymru, where the conference was held. Subsequently, during the afternoon, Eluned Morgan, who serves as both the Welsh Labour leader and First Minister, declared an additional allocation of £22m for the Welsh NHS, earmarked for addressing waiting lists. As participants arrived for the morning session of the conference, they were met by signs displaying messages such as “Enough is enough” and “No Farmers No Food.” Gareth Wyn Jones, a farmer and broadcaster from Conwy county, stated that his participation, along with others, in the demonstration was intended to “air their frustrations.” He characterized the revisions to inheritance tax regulations as a “massive bombshell” that would impact “thousands” of agricultural households. Mr. Jones remarked, “For us in Wales, we’ve been under a Labour government for 25 years and enough is enough.” He added, “The morale, the mental health… everything is at an all-time low.” He continued, “People need to understand we want to feed them and, at this moment in time, it’s going to be a massive inflation in food.” He concluded by stating, “And the poorer people in society are the ones that are going to suffer, and that’s what Labour should be protecting.” Huw Irranca-Davies, the Deputy Welsh First Minister and Rural Affairs Secretary, engaged with a group of farmers and held discussions with representatives from the farming unions.
