Appearing on BBC Radio Manchester’s podcast, The Devils’ Advocate, supporter Jay Mottershead offered his perspective on whether Marcus Rashford or Alejandro Garnacho should be in the starting lineup for the match against Arsenal. Mottershead stated, “I’ll probably go with Rashford. The reason I say that isn’t because of how many goals he’s got since [Ruben] Amorim has come in, but I like Garnacho from the bench. I think he is a real option. When Garnacho comes on, he wants the ball, he can create things and he makes things happen. We saw it under Ruud van Nistelrooy.” He also defended Rashford, adding, “I think Rashford is a good player and I don’t buy into the criticism he gets.” Mottershead concluded his assessment by noting, “I think in terms of an impact sub, Garnacho has got the edge and in terms of who has been better under Amorim, Rashford has got the edge.” Regarding the possibility of Manchester United defeating Arsenal, Mottershead affirmed, “Yes. Whether we will or not, I don’t know. The way things are going at the moment, we have every reason to believe it’s possible.” His primary concern, however, was the suspensions of Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, which he described as “a blow.” Mottershead elaborated on Mainoo’s significance, saying, “You can forget how good Mainoo is and take him for granted. Then he comes back and his first couple of touches you’re just like, that’s what we’ve missed.” He further highlighted Martinez’s value, remarking, “Martinez as well is one of the few signings under Ten Hag who was a success. I know he’s had injuries, but he is still a very, very good player.” Mottershead concluded that the absence of these two players “could end up being the difference.”
