A coroner has concluded that a woman discovered deceased in a North Yorkshire river died by suicide. Sophie Lambert, aged 22, from Starbeck, Harrogate, was found in the River Nidd, near Knaresborough, by a dog walker on June 21, 2023. Her discovery followed an extensive search that began after she went missing five days earlier. At the conclusion of an inquest, North Yorkshire Coroner Catherine Cundy delivered a verdict of suicide, specifying that Ms. Lambert’s death resulted from drowning and cocaine ingestion. Ms. Cundy determined that Ms. Lambert suffered from mental health challenges that were “devastating for her to manage,” attributed to “significant trauma” she endured during her adolescence. The coroner stated: “She was a young woman who had a normal and happy childhood until she was 14 and went through two significant traumatic events that lead to mental health problems.” Ms. Cundy further noted that Ms. Lambert had been hospitalized approximately 30 times for “being a risk to herself” and frequently disappeared. The coroner also indicated that Ms. Lambert was later found to be self-harming as a means to alleviate the pain caused by her trauma. The coroner elaborated: “She had post-traumatic stress disorder and emotionally unstable personality disorder due to the trauma and that was not easy to treat.” She added: “Her mental health problems were devastating for her to manage and were also devastating for her mother and the mental health services that struggled to treat her.” Ms. Cundy also stated that Ms. Lambert did not engage with the mental health support provided to her, explaining that “sadly she struggled to communicate” and believed the services were not beneficial. Furthermore, the coroner noted that CCTV footage captured Ms. Lambert departing her residence just before 19:00 BST on the evening preceding the discovery of her body, and she was seen posting her keys through her front door. Ms. Lambert’s family was present at the inquest, where her mother, Michelle, testified that her daughter’s “end goal was always to end her life as she said the world was too cruel – she made that clear.” Michelle further shared that her daughter had a deep affection for animals and had been making arrangements for a holiday to a caravan park with her nieces and nephews shortly before her passing.
