Xabi Alonso has declared “there is no time for tourism” in anticipation of his return to Anfield with his Bayer Leverkusen squad on Tuesday. The Spaniard previously played for the Reds, making 210 appearances between 2004 and 2009, and was part of the team that secured the 2005 Champions League title. After leading Leverkusen to an undefeated Bundesliga title last season and experiencing only one loss across all competitions, Alonso was initially considered a leading candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp but ultimately chose to remain with the German club. Alonso stated: “Let’s talk about the game – it’s more interesting than my future. Let’s talk about the great players on both sides – that is what is in my head.” He further commented on the upcoming fixture: “For us, it is a big challenge to come here. Liverpool, at the moment, is one of the best if not the best in Europe.” He added: “It’s a good squad, a good coach. At Anfield, it’s a big challenge. We’re looking forward to it. Let’s see what happens.” When questioned about the reception he expects on his return to Merseyside and the possibility of the crowd chanting his name, Alonso responded: “We will see. I will tell you after the game how I feel.” He clarified his focus, saying: “There will be a moment for everything, but the main thing is not me. It’s the players and how we deal with the emotions you have in this stadium.”
