The completion of repair work on one of the two bridges connecting the north Wales mainland with Anglesey is now projected for the close of 2025. Rhun ap Iorwerth, who serves as the Ynys Mon Member of the Senedd (MS) and leader of Plaid Cymru, conveyed his dissatisfaction regarding the extended timeline for the Menai Bridge project, stating that it “feels as if we’ve been misled”. He asserted that the original completion target of August next year has been shifted to December of the subsequent year. Conversely, the Welsh government stated that the overall duration of the project had not changed, explaining that it was “pausing the start of phase two” to enable the bridge to fully reopen during the winter period. A technical analysis revealed significant safety issues, resulting in the bridge’s closure for four months in 2022. The repair efforts commenced in September 2023 and have since led to travel disruptions for individuals commuting between the island and the mainland. The project was initially planned for a two-year duration; however, recent information indicates that completion could now require a minimum of 27 months. Mr. ap Iorwerth further alleged that once the work schedule recommences in March, traffic management protocols will be continuously enforced on the bridge, encompassing weekends. Previously, these traffic arrangements were restricted to weekdays. Mr. ap Iorwerth mentioned that the announcement of a winter pause in repair work was initially well-received, suggesting the project was progressing ahead of its timeline. Nevertheless, he stated that it “feels as if we’ve been misled” because of the four-month extension, shifting the completion from August to December. He commented, “While the work being undertaken to ensure the bridge is safe and resilient is important, it’s clearly impacting local residents and businesses, and now disruption will be prolonged beyond what they were initially told.” The Welsh government responded by stating: “The length of the programme of works has not altered. We’ve listened to stakeholders and the local communities and are pausing the start of phase two to allow the full reopening of the bridge over the winter, including the Christmas period, to help local businesses.” Furthermore, the Welsh government communicated on its official website: “We expect all the required works will be completed by the end of December 2025 (subject to weather). This will ensure the Menai Suspension Bridge is ready for its 200th anniversary in 2026.” Post navigation Two Incumbent Alderney States Members Unsuccessful in Re-election Bid Demonstration Held Over Closure of Two Swimming Pools
