New Scotland international Freddy Douglas has secured his inaugural professional contract with Edinburgh, notably having played international rugby prior to his senior club debut. The 19-year-old flanker made his international debut for Scotland against Portugal last month, becoming the nation’s youngest male player since 1963. Subsequently, he made his first senior appearance for Edinburgh last weekend, entering the game as a substitute during their URC victory over Benetton. This rapid progression into senior rugby culminates in a two-year agreement with the club he supported during his youth. Douglas commented on the signing, stating, “I have really fond memories of coming to watch Edinburgh play, including some of the guys that are still here, so it’s pretty crazy to be sharing a field with them now.” He further added, “It’s a dream come true. I’m super delighted. It’s all happened so quickly but I’ve been so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had. Everyone has been really supportive and I’m really enjoying being part of the environment.” Scotland forwards coach John Dalziel previously described Douglas as “world class already” during the Autumn Nations Series. Earlier this year, Douglas distinguished himself in the Under-20s Six Nations, achieving the highest number of tackles and turnovers among all players. Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt expressed his satisfaction, saying, “I’m delighted for Freddy. He’s an incredibly hard-working individual and looks to improve his game every day he comes into training.” Everitt continued, “We’re happy with how he’s developing. His talent at the breakdown is obvious to see but he offers a lot of physicality elsewhere around the park.”
