The restoration work on a road, which had been closed due to the emergence of a sinkhole, has concluded significantly earlier than initially anticipated. The A361, connecting Wardington in Oxfordshire and Chipping Warden in Northamptonshire, was compelled to close earlier in the current month following the formation of a sinkhole attributed to substantial rainfall. Oxfordshire County Council had previously indicated that the road’s repair would likely “take several weeks or months to fix.” However, the council has now verified that the thoroughfare was reopened on Thursday. Councillor Andrew Gant, who serves as OCC’s transport chief, stated: “I am extremely grateful to our highways teams for making this such a priority and for reopening this busy road earlier than expected.” He further added: “While this repair work was carried on an emergency basis in order to reopen the road as quickly as possible, we will be working with our partners at Cherwell District Council and the Environment Agency in the new year to explore whether more permanent repairs are necessary.” He concluded by assuring: “If this is the case, residents can be assured that they will be carried out as planned works which should be less disruptive to users of this busy road.” Chris Brant, a representative for the local area on Cherwell District Council, commented: “The last few weeks have been difficult for many residents, so this will be very welcome news.” The formation of the sinkhole was thought to have resulted from the inundation of the adjacent River Cherwell, which submerged a culvert – identified as a brick water pipe – situated beneath the road. Local residents had previously informed the BBC that they felt “cut out” as a consequence of the road’s closure. Mark Chivers, who is disabled, conveyed that individuals lacking personal transport were “really quite stuck.” For updates, BBC Oxfordshire can be followed on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.
