Authorities Denounce Anti-Social Incidents at Llandudno General Hospital

Llandudno General Hospital has experienced numerous incidents of anti-social behaviour, including a mattress being set alight. Youths have been responsible for insulting nursing personnel, flooding hospital restrooms, and breaking into the contractors’ office. These repeated after-hours intrusions by young individuals compelled hospital management to limit access to the premises. The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Conwy County Borough Council, and North Wales Police have jointly denounced these actions. The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to the hospital following the deliberate ignition of a mattress within a store room. Separately, a youth shattered a wine bottle outside the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU), sustaining a hand injury. This individual subsequently spread blood across the unit’s windows and walls, initially declining medical assistance from staff. The previous week, nursing staff encountered verbal abuse from young individuals congregating near the MIU. During this particular event, the nurses were attending to a patient whose condition had become critical, necessitating immediate transfer via emergency ambulance. As a direct consequence of these occurrences, security personnel have now been deployed for out-of-hours patrols. Nichola Hughes, who serves as the head of intermediate care and specialist nursing for BCUHB’s Central Integrated Health Community, stated that anti-social behaviour is entirely inappropriate within or near a hospital environment. She emphasized, “Our staff are trying to care for people and it is totally unacceptable they should have to endure this. Their jobs are hard enough without having to withstand verbal abuse and criminal damage.” North Wales Police has collaborated closely with the health board to ensure the safety of staff and address instances of misconduct on the premises. District Inspector Catherine Walker reported that police officers have been required to respond to “unnecessary incidents” at the hospital. She appealed to parents and carers to ascertain the whereabouts of their children and affirmed that authorities will deal “with all such instances robustly.”
