Authorities are seeking a woman who was assaulted by an XL bully dog and protected her own pet by lifting it above her head. Armed police units responded to Dunella Road in Sheffield on 7 December at 13:10 GMT, after receiving reports that an XL bully had bitten a woman. A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police stated that upon the officers’ arrival, the animal charged at them, leading to it being “deemed necessary to destroy the dog at the scene.” The spokesperson further added, “We are keen to speak to a woman who we believe was fearful for her own dog’s safety and subjected to fear from the dog.” According to the spokesperson, a passer-by intervened to assist, and “put the woman and her dog into his car and drove them to safety.” Law enforcement officials confirmed that an investigation into the dog’s behavior and its escape was currently underway. Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, XL bullies are prohibited, making it an offense to own one unless specific conditions are met: they must be registered exempt, neutered, microchipped, insured, muzzled, and kept on a lead when in public.
