Loan players are often perceived as inconsistent, with varying degrees of success. At Tannadice, Dundee United has experienced both highly successful loan signings, such as cup-winning hero Andy Webster, and less impactful ones. However, this season’s loan quartet—Jack Walton, Manny Adegboyega, Luca Stephenson, and Sam Dalby—has collectively achieved significant success to date. Jack Walton, who served as the league-winning goalkeeper last season, was considered an obvious choice to bring back to the club for the current term. He represented a significant improvement over previous goalkeepers and maintained a consistent, reassuring presence in goal throughout the last season. His strong performance has reportedly persisted into the current season. Manny Adegboyega, on loan from Norwich, has established himself as a crucial component of a robust defensive line. He has shown consistent improvement weekly and developed a strong partnership with Declan Gallacher and Kevin Holt. Adegboyega is noted for his positive demeanor on the field and displays considerable flair. Having recently turned 21, he is anticipated to have a distinguished career in football. Luca Stephenson, acquired from Liverpool, immediately garnered some favor with supporters. This season, he has been deployed in various positions and, apart from an incident at Motherwell in the League Cup, has consistently met expectations. He is now considered a regular starter, known for being “Cool, calm and exceptionally consistent.” Sam Dalby, who was considered surplus to requirements at Wrexham, was successfully persuaded by Jim Goodwin to join the club for a year to contribute goals for the team in Tangerine. He has performed reliably and appears capable of scoring in every match. Dalby is characterized as “big, strong, always on the move,” and crucially, possesses a keen sense of goal-scoring. Consequently, the Dundee United loan cohort for the 2024-25 season is proving to be effective. There is also a possibility that some of these players could transition into permanent signings.
