Arrests Made in Migrant Smuggling Probe Following Early Morning Operations

An ongoing inquiry into the illicit transport of migrants from the United Kingdom to France using lorries has resulted in the arrest and charging of five individuals. Officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) conducted early morning operations at various London properties on November 20 to apprehend these suspects, aged between 43 and 54, all of whom are believed to be Algerian and Egyptian nationals. Among those taken into custody, a 52-year-old Algerian citizen is believed to hold a senior position within the criminal organization involved in human trafficking. These detentions followed the discovery of over 200 North African migrants, some of whom were children, concealed in lorry trailers en route from the UK to France at different times throughout 2023. All individuals presented themselves at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, facing charges of conspiring to aid the unlawful entry of a person into an EU member state, specifically France. In total, twenty individuals have been apprehended during the course of this inquiry, with five men among them having already been found guilty and incarcerated for their role in transporting migrants. Chris Hill, an NCA branch commander, stated that these arrests marked a “key moment” in their examination of extensive criminal organizations.
