Dachshunds and their owners convened at a community centre on Sunday for a Christmas tea party. The Dog Meat Trade Dachshund Rescue and Support Group arranged the gathering at Shurdington Community Centre, providing an opportunity for dogs and owners to “regroup after a year of campaigning.” George Porter from the group explained that the organization rescues “sausage dogs” “in Asia who are destined for the meat market.” He commented, “It’s just a chance for all to get together and let the dogs play.” Mr. Porter stated that the cost to transport a dog by plane totals “about £5,000.” However, dogs also require injections, including one for rabies protection, and vet checks, in addition to a quarantine period, bringing the overall expense to “about £15,000.” Since its inception in 2020, the charity has facilitated the rescue of over 250 dogs. “We’ve rescued 67 dogs since we did the party last year, so we’ve raised a lot of money and it’s not just [this tea party],” Mr Porter noted. He further added, “There’s events that go on across the country.” Dottie, who brought her dog, Dot Dot, to the party, informed the BBC that “every penny” raised at the event would be directed towards the rescue of dachshunds. She declared, “Our motto is ‘No dachshund left behind’.” She concluded, “So we will save as many as we can.” Follow BBC Gloucestershire on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
