A church, notable as the burial site of Elizabeth Cromwell, widow of Oliver Cromwell, is set to receive approximately £20,000 in grant funding for critical repair work. Historic England previously designated The Church of St Andrew, located in Northborough, close to Peterborough, as being in a “very bad” state following the failure of its lead chancel roof. According to the National Churches Trust, immediate intervention was necessary due to rainwater infiltration into the church, which elevated the potential for insect infestation or fungal growth. The Reverend Keir Dow, who serves as vicar for the five parishes comprising The Nine Bridges Benefice, expressed optimism that these grants would facilitate the restoration of the Grade I listed property. The edifice had been included on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, indicating it was at “immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric”. The absence of drainage on the roof has led to an accumulation of dampness and mould. Funding for the urgent repairs includes a £5,000 grant from the National Churches Trust, a £10,000 grant provided by the Wolfson Foundation, and a £5,000 grant from the Headley Trust. Mr Dow stated: “This historic building is not just a place for Sunday services; it is a cornerstone of our village’s heritage, standing as a symbol of faith and belonging for over 800 years.” He added: “These repairs are vital to preserving its beauty and structural integrity for future generations to enjoy and be inspired by.” Mr Dow concluded: “The grants will enable us to repair and protect the building, ensuring it remains a safe, accessible and inspiring environment. By investing in its future, we are safeguarding not just bricks and mortar but also a shared legacy of hope, fellowship and worship.” Claire Walker, chief executive of the National Churches Trust, commented: “Not only will this [grant] protect this important heritage but it will help to keep the church building open and serving local people.” Post navigation Christmas Gathering Aims to Combat Loneliness Dachshunds Gather for Charitable Tea Party
