A £5.7 million initiative aimed at enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists in a specific Nottingham area has reached its conclusion. Nottingham City Council secured the necessary funding through a successful bid to the government’s Transforming Cities Fund, enabling modifications within the Bilborough and Leen Valley areas. The construction, which commenced in July 2023 along Beechdale Road and Hollington Road, involved replacing existing cycle lanes with the implementation of two new segregated pathways. According to the city council, improvements were also made to junctions and pedestrian crossings, alongside the resurfacing of roads and pavements. Additional modifications included the removal of the central reservation, which facilitated the creation of extra space for a cycle lane. This alteration now permits residents to make left or right turns when exiting their drives, a change from the previous restriction to a single direction. Sustrans, a charity dedicated to walking, wheeling, and cycling, provided a contribution of £590,000 to the initiative. City council leader Neghat Khan stated: “This project is all about making it safer and easier for people to get around – and it contributes to our plan to reduce emissions from cars and be the first carbon neutral city by 2028.” The council indicated its current efforts to secure further funding to extend these improvements, specifically mentioning a safe segregated cycle route from Wigman Road to Strelley Road, intended to enhance safety for individuals commuting to Harvey Hadden and Bilborough College.
