A proposal for the construction of a new petrol station situated on a prominent road in Bradford has received approval, marking its second submission attempt. This filling station, along with an associated new retail outlet, is slated to take the place of the Regal Complex, which currently comprises various restaurants and cafes located at the intersection of White Abbey Road and Whetley Hill. An earlier, comparable application had been rejected by Bradford Council earlier in the year, following objections from planners regarding issues such as the “visually intrusive” design and an inadequate site layout. Urban Future Planning Consultancy Ltd presented revised plans on behalf of the applicants, Pearl, and these modified proposals have now secured the council’s endorsement. According to council officers, the proposed filling station represents an acceptable utilization of the site, and the previously identified concerns that resulted in the rejection of the prior application have been addressed. The Local Democracy Reporting Service indicates that the location initially operated as a filling station before its conversion into a restaurant, various food businesses, and a car park. The application document noted that the vicinity is “locally referred to as ‘Mini Bollywood’ given the array of fabric shops and diverse cuisine catering for the area’s south east Asian community”. Five objections were lodged against the proposals, with some individuals expressing concerns that the filling station could contribute to increased pollution on the already busy thoroughfare. However, planners asserted that a bustling road leading into the city centre, already host to numerous other commercial establishments, constituted an appropriate setting for a filling station and an accompanying shop. The petrol station is scheduled to operate continuously, 24 hours daily, while the retail shop’s operating hours have been adjusted to run from 6am until midnight.
