Fergus O’Neill previously secured five wickets in both innings during Victoria’s Sheffield Shield victory over South Australia last season. Fast-bowling all-rounder Fergus O’Neill is set to join Nottinghamshire for the initial month of the upcoming County Championship season. The Australian cricketer was recognized as Victoria’s player of the season, having claimed 40 Sheffield Shield wickets at an average of 17.25 during the previous term. This impressive tally included his performance of taking five wickets in each innings against South Australia. His notable performances also led to him being awarded the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year at the Australian Cricket Awards. The 23-year-old has also demonstrated batting capability, achieving a top score of 70 not out and currently maintaining an average of 22 in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season. Notts head coach Peter Moores indicated that the club anticipates this short-term agreement could develop into a more permanent relationship. Moores commented, “It looks like he’s improving all the time and I think his style of bowling will work well in the early season conditions in England.” He further elaborated, “His strengths are his consistency and lateral movement, which are ideal skills to complement the rest of our bowling unit. “He is more than capable with the bat, too, and will bolster our lower middle-order, from which runs are crucial – especially early in the season.”” Moores also stated that O’Neill, whose availability includes home matches against Durham, Essex, and Sussex, along with the away fixture at Warwickshire, will offer cover for Dane Paterson, who is slated to miss the season’s commencement due to international commitments with South Africa.
