Ireland’s forwards coach, Paul O’Connell, who has held the role since 2021, has stated he will not be assuming the vacant head coach role at Munster Rugby. As a player at Thomond Park, the former Munster captain secured two Heineken Cups and three league championships. Graham Rowntree, a former England prop, departed from his role as Munster’s head coach in October, following a series of three consecutive defeats in the United Rugby Championship [URC]. O’Connell, aged 45, had been mentioned as a potential successor, but he clarified that he would not be accepting the role “in the short term” as he is currently focused on preparing Ireland for their last Test match of the year, scheduled for Saturday against Australia. He stated, “No, I have no interest in it,” adding, “Certainly in the short term, anyway. I just hope they get the right man.” This week, two of Rowntree’s assistants, Denis Leamy and Mike Prendergast, extended their contracts until 2027. However, no announcement has been made regarding the future leadership of the team, and forwards coach Andi Kyriacou also departed from the province last week. Ian Costello, the head of rugby operations, is presently serving as interim head coach. Additionally, Alex Codling has been appointed as a forwards coach consultant until the season concludes, while simultaneously retaining his existing position as forwards coach for the Ireland women’s team. Munster is set to host the Lions in United Rugby Championship action on Saturday evening.
