A charitable organization in Devon has prepared over 400 packages containing food, beverages, and recreational items for individuals requiring assistance during the Christmas period. Open Door, an Exmouth-based charity, recently conceived the ‘Bags of Hope’ initiative to support its beneficiaries. This program involved the local populace contributing items to fill the distinctive blue bags, which were intended for elderly, homeless, and vulnerable individuals. Lisa Pike, the charity’s CEO, stated: “We ordered 250 bags and within four hours they were all collected, which was incredible. We ordered more and they all went as well.” A total of 435 bags have been distributed, with numerous packages including a personalized message from the contributor. Ashley, a recipient of the program, has been supported by the charity since November 2022, following the completion of his rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction. He remarked: “When I got my bag it showed me that there is a lot of love and a lot of support out there for people who are struggling out there, such as myself.” He continued: “I’ve had a lot of struggles in life fighting addiction and I walked in [to Open Door] the day I finished rehab and I didn’t really have a plan.” Ashley stated: “I didn’t want to be homeless because that would have caused a relapse so what they did for me was cook me a meal, they gave me support and the woman who gave me support is now my sponsor.” He added: “It’s all about being in that network where you can engage with people and really tell them what’s on your mind.” Ashley has maintained sobriety for 18 months and has reestablished his relationship with his son, attributing these positive changes to the charity’s assistance. He concluded: “I’ll be honest, Open Door has really saved me.” For updates, follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook, and Instagram. Story ideas can be submitted to spotlight@bbc.co.uk. Copyright 2024 BBC.
