Donning old man face masks, they exited the vehicle. What transpired next was subsequently characterized by defense lawyer Donald Findlay KC as “a scene from The Godfather”. Clad in trench coats, the pair proceeded into Applerow Motors, situated off the busy Balmore Road, and initiated gunfire. The proprietor, David Lyons, sought refuge, but his 21-year-old nephew, Michael, was fatally shot. Steven Lyons, David’s nephew, sustained injuries, as did his associate Robert Pickett, who lost a kidney. These assailants were operatives for the Daniel crime clan, which law enforcement believed to be headed by Jamie Daniel. The Daniel family was engaged in an intense conflict with the Lyons family, who were based in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire. A brutal gangland rivalry, largely conducted covertly until then, now dominated public attention. This lethal antagonism, spanning over two decades, is currently the subject of a new BBC Radio 5 Live true crime podcast. Titled “Gangster: The Daniels and the Lyons,” the series documents the fierce struggle for dominance over Glasgow’s illicit drug trade. The six-part production also explores the repercussions of numerous shootings and incessant retaliatory assaults. Ten days
