A man apprehended on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman at the Groucho Club has been released on bail until February. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the alleged rape occurred inside the private members’ establishment located on Dean Street, Soho, central London, on November 13. The 34-year-old man, who resides in Hertfordshire, was taken into custody on Saturday and has since been released as further inquiries proceed. Last month, the Westminster City Council initiated the club’s closure following assertions that a “recent serious criminal offence” had transpired there. The council stated it had suspended the venue’s licence for a duration of up to 28 days, acting upon a request from the Met Police. A comprehensive hearing to deliberate on the venue’s licence is scheduled. The police force clarified that there is no indication of involvement from the venue’s employees in the reported incident. The Groucho Club, established in 1985, was conceived as a more relaxed alternative to traditional private members’ clubs and is frequently visited by prominent figures from the media, entertainment, and arts sectors. The club has not issued any comment regarding either its closure or the arrest.
