Formal investigations have commenced regarding the fatalities of two individuals resulting from a residential explosion that occurred last month. Emma Whitting, the Bedfordshire coroner, was informed that Paul Swales, aged 85, passed away on October 19 at the site of the explosion at a residence located in Cleat Hill, Bedford. Concurrently, Mr. Swales’ sister-in-law, Julia Harris, 84, was transported to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford; however, a document stated that her “condition deteriorated and she succumbed to her injuries” on October 31. According to the report, authored by Ben Horrell from Central Bedfordshire Coroner’s Court, initial findings indicated that a gas leak was the cause of the explosion, though Bedfordshire Police continues to investigate the matter. The report also stated that the official causes of death have not yet been determined, awaiting additional investigation. The Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service verified that natural gas was responsible for the explosion, but the specific “ignition source” is still under inquiry. This explosion occurred near a location where an underground gas leak was identified in July, following the drilling of a borehole for the installation of a ground source heat pump. Law enforcement officials stated that the Crown Prosecution Service has been engaged in their investigation of the incident, which they described as possessing “criminal and civil aspects.” For updates on news from Beds, Herts, and Bucks, information is available on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
