Councillors have stipulated that a store’s approval to sell alcohol is contingent upon the continuous presence of a security guard. The application submitted by Heron Foods for alcohol sales at its Grimsby location, situated on Second Avenue in Nunsthorpe, received approval, subject to a specific condition. The food retailer contended that a constant security presence was unnecessary, highlighting that the Spar convenience store directly across the street is not subject to the same requirement. This decision, sanctioned by North East Lincolnshire Council, follows an objection from the police, who expressed concerns that granting the application could result in an increase in shoplifting incidents. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported a total of 56 offenses occurring at the store between November 2023 and October 2024, which included three assaults recorded since April. Police indicated that the reported incidents encompassed threats to smash windows, threats to stab an individual with a dirty needle, and threats to burn down a home address. The store recently allocated £250,000 towards CCTV systems, alongside providing staff with headphones and fobs to enhance communication regarding potential incidents. A representative for Heron Foods stated: “Just for the alcohol, a member of the SIA (Security Industry Authority) on the front door isn’t required.” While alcohol sales would be restricted to five cupboards, police expressed the view that any sale would contribute to an increase in incidents. A representative for Humberside Police commented: “It’s not just the thefts that are the issues, there are assaults on members of staff and members of the public.“It’s a proportionate approach that we’re suggesting, in terms of moving forward.” Post navigation Man Charged Following Alleged Rape of Teenager in Dundee Car Park Official Inquiries Commence into Cleat Hill Explosion Fatalities
