An ardent supporter of Hampshire Cricket has undertaken a solo journey to Guyana, aiming to back the team in their pursuit of the inaugural Global Super League championship. Alan Davis, a resident of Newbury, Berkshire, stands as the sole Hampshire enthusiast present in South America for this tournament. Mr. Davis described the excursion as “something different,” further remarking, “When else would you come to Guyana?” For the Hawks to secure a spot in Friday’s final, they are required to win their concluding group stage match in the 20-over tournament against Victoria, scheduled for Thursday. “From my point of view, it’s another opportunity to see Hampshire somewhere new and somewhere different,” Mr. Davis conveyed to BBC Radio Solent. He continued, “To come out of the UK, and it was zero degrees when I left on Thursday morning, to come out here and it’s 32 degrees – [it’s an] absolute pleasure.” This competition, featuring five teams representing five distinct nations, marks South America’s inaugural independent cricket event. Mr. Davis mentioned that he has “ventured out lots” throughout his stay in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana. He further stated, “I’ve been walking around lots, thanks to my hotel receptionist telling me how very, very safe it is to walk around during the daytime, which is a luxury that I can do that – the players can’t.” He concluded this thought with, “Hey, we’re now in December, and I’m watching cricket in 32 degrees – who can complain?” Following an initial victory, Hampshire has experienced consecutive losses in the 20-over tournament, including a defeat to the Guyana Amazon Warriors on Sunday. The team, who are three-time T20 Blast champions, currently occupy third place in the standings, trailing the leading two teams, Guyana and Victoria, by two points. To advance to the final and move closer to the $1m (£764,000) prize pot, the Hawks are required to defeat table-topping Victoria later in the week.
