The leader of Inverclyde Council has been charged in connection with alleged domestic assault and breach of the peace. Stephen McCabe, 60, has been released and is set to appear in court at a later date. The Labour councillor represents the Inverclyde East ward, covering Port Glasgow, Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village. It is understood Mr McCabe has been administratively suspended from the Labour Party pending the outcome of any investigation. A party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously.”They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.” A spokesperson for Inverclyde Council stated the local authority was aware of a police investigation and chose not to comment further. Police Scotland confirmed a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
