An individual has confessed to issuing death threats against his local Member of Parliament, having previously expressed a desire to confine the MP within a structure and ignite it. Benjamin Clarke, aged 31, residing in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, presented himself before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court. He entered a guilty plea for both making threats to kill MP Sam Rushworth and committing a malicious communications offence. Mr. Clarke, whose address is on Durham Street, received bail under the stipulation that he refrain from contacting the Labour Member of Parliament prior to his sentencing hearing scheduled for January 16 at Durham Crown Court. Prosecutor Sara Kemp stated that Clarke reached out to the MP via social media in August, conveying the message: “I cannot wait for your next public appearance, you will be lucky to leave it in one piece.” Subsequently, Mr. Rushworth blocked Clarke, thereby stopping any additional malicious communications, according to Ms. Kemp. In the subsequent month, Clarke informed two mental health professionals of his intent to locate the MP and violently strike his head against a pavement, to ignite a building where the MP was present, and then “lock all the doors so I could hear him screaming.” He further stated: “I’m going to do it, it’s just a matter of time.” Ms. Kemp mentioned that the Member of Parliament had submitted a victim impact statement, expressing significant apprehension regarding the well-being of his family. Amrit Jandoo, representing the defence, asserted that Clarke harbored no political opinions or ill will specifically directed at Mr. Rushworth, “but it is quite clear he has taken umbrage against the MP.” Mr. Jandoo requested the preparation of a pre-sentence report in advance of Clarke’s scheduled appearance at the crown court. Mr. Jandoo also noted that his client possesses a background of receiving mental health care. He further stated: “He would fully accept that his behaviour on these occasions has been very poor.” Post navigation Mother-of-Six Shares Abuse Experience to Aid Others in Escaping Domestic Violence Commemoration for Irish woman executed for witchcraft seven centuries ago
