Stoke City manager Narcis Pelach expressed his “disappointment” following his team’s defeat at Sunderland, attributing the loss to a late, deflected winning goal scored during the storm-affected match. Pelach’s tenure at Stoke City has seen him secure three victories in 15 games. The decisive goal, scored by teenager Tommy Watson, was his second of the match and came with only four minutes remaining. This result extends the Potters’ winless streak to five games, including two consecutive losses, causing them to fall to 15th position in the Championship standings, maintaining a four-point lead over the relegation zone. Stoke is scheduled to play Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night. This upcoming fixture coincides with the first anniversary of Alex Neil’s departure from the club, a period during which neither Steven Schumacher nor Pelach has yet established a consistent winning strategy. Pelach’s current win rate stands at 20%, equating to three wins from 15 matches, which is lower than Alex Neil’s 33% (22 wins in 66 games) and Steven Schumacher’s 40% (13 wins in 32 games). On Saturday, Sunderland, currently in a strong league position, might have secured a more substantial victory. They struck the post, preventing Watson from achieving a hat-trick, and registered 10 shots on target compared to Stoke’s three. Pelach commented on the opposition, stating, “They had a lot of shots. They are a good side. In the final third, they have presence, they switch the ball fast and have wingers who can do damage in one-on-one situations. We had people blocking shots. A lot of bodies.” He further expressed his frustration regarding the timing of a goal conceded: “But I’m disappointed because we conceded the first goal just after we had scored. It’s a situation we can avoid. We just need to win the ball in the air. He’s competing for the ball in the air and no one went for it.” Pelach also reflected on his team’s performance, saying, “We could have taken something from the game because at times we were good on the ball, trying to attack them and accelerate through the middle. We had our chances and moments as well.” Concluding his remarks, he reiterated his disappointment about the match’s outcome: “But I’m disappointed because we lost at the very end with a deflection goal.”
