Shan Masood, captain of Pakistan’s men’s Test team and a recent recruit for Hampshire, lauded his side’s “team effort” after their exciting inaugural Global Super League match victory in Guyana. The Hawks secured a win against the Bangladesh club Rangpur Riders in a super over, played at the Providence Stadium on Wednesday evening. On his debut, Masood contributed 56 runs from 41 deliveries as Hampshire concluded their T20 innings with a score of 132, a total that the Riders subsequently matched. Following the Riders’ 12-1 score from their additional six deliveries, Liam Dawson of Hampshire struck the second-to-last ball of his team’s super over into the stands for a six, thereby securing the win. “What a game it was, a great debut,” Masood stated to BBC Radio Solent., external”There were some great words spoken by the captain Chris Wood, who said we had to fight for every run because in this competition run rate can come into play.”James Fuller was also brilliant and it was a great team effort – we had a few slips in each department but I think everyone made up for it in one way for the other.” Hampshire had announced only days prior to the tournament’s commencement that Masood would participate for them in the inaugural GSL under a short-term agreement. Masood holds the captaincy for Pakistan’s men’s Test team and guided them to a 2-1 series triumph over England in October, where he also achieved a century in the initial match. James Vince, the Hawks’ regular captain, is absent from the tournament due to his contractual commitment to play for the Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition. “I had no idea how this [deal] came about,” Masood further commented. “I was playing first-class cricket in Pakistan, we were almost done with our season and my agent said that [Hants director of cricket] Giles White had called and wanted me to play for Hampshire.”I thought it was a great opportunity – one of my really close friends, Mo Abbas, is a hero at Hampshire so he messaged me and said the lads would be really good with me and it was a great proposition.”It’s a great club and I’m really glad that it worked out.” Hampshire’s next fixture in the GSL is against the Lahore Qalandars on Saturday, 30 November.
