Early in the Scottish football season, much discussion has focused on Aberdeen’s prospects of challenging the Old Firm. Less attention has been given to Dundee United’s potential for a similar achievement. Nevertheless, their current performance this term suggests they warrant inclusion in this discussion. While still considered an outside chance, they currently occupy third place, trailing the Ibrox side, Rangers, by only three points after 14 league fixtures. Jim Goodwin’s team possesses several notable attributes, primarily their capacity to secure difficult results both at home and on the road. This particular characteristic can significantly advance a team. Furthermore, they evidently demonstrate a strong sense of belief. The Tangerines have already demonstrated to both the broader football community and themselves their capability to compete effectively against any opponent in the Premiership, with the exception of Celtic, whom they have not yet faced. An additional trait they exhibit is a grounded approach; whenever Goodwin or any of the players are interviewed, they consistently adhere to the ‘one game at a time’ mantra, asserting that the league table’s position is not significant at this point in the campaign. Although this cautious message emanates from the dressing room, it would be understandable if United fans are already beginning to envision qualification for Europe next season.
